Serious Stuff
I've just seen a message on the big American China adoption list, and in more detail on another list I read, saying that the CCAA has turned down another African American couple (who were logged in in late 2006) solely due to the colour of their skin. This is absolutely awful news for the family, and in my opinion for the integrity of the whole China adoption programme. How can people be treated this way in this day and age?!?! What does this mean for other black families enduring the wait for a referral from the CCAA?? What does this mean for me and my family - we want an ethical adoption. How ethical is it to carry on waiting for a child from China, knowing that the CCAA treat black families this way? This also has personal ramifications, due to Little Prince's background - we could be denied in a similar way. Or we could be allowed to receive our referral, as currently Little Prince's looks reflect mainly his white heritage, but isn't that taking advantage of White Priviledge??? As a current multiracial family I feel it is my duty to try to actively combat racism and not to benefit from systems that harm people of other races. How does this square with keeping our papers in China....

I think it is known that the Chinese are not keen on black people.Though I'm sure thats not the case for many Chinese people.
Its so sad for the African American families.I don't know how they can get away with it..but they do and its not right.
I also find that our system doesn't allow us to adopt black babies due to cultural reasons..so this might be there thinking that white people have a similar skin tone.
Though it wasn't that long ago that people referred to the Chinese as yellow.Even the Chinese don't like their eyes being too long and are predjudice to themselves..so what hope is there for a black family.
I don't think it will affect your application.Though you may feel in principle that the system stinks and maybe it always has stunk but the CCAA can pick and choose who they want now as so many applications and then you have to question the morals of the agencies making money out of adoption.
No wonder the British Govt is anti international adoption..we can see why at times.

I think you will find that social workers in this country will try very hard to match a child with the same/similar ethnicity parents, and minority ethnic children probably spend longer in care than white children do. BUT there are transracial placements domestically (our family is one example) and I know of lots and lots of others placed with children from many different ethnic backgrounds, including black.
I am totally disgusted that the CCAA is so blatently racist, contravening international law and common decency. Whether or not individuals in a society are racist, the govt should NOT be and should be held to account for this.

I agree with you but according to our student Chinese people do like black people,well maybe its not the case for the CCAA?

I'm sure that some people in China are racist (just as in any society) and there will be others that aren't. But IMHO racism from a govt dept is a whole different thing than racism from individuals. I hope the African American families can find a way to fight this, perhaps they need to involve their own govt?
Its a very sad situation all round.
